Saying 1 ::DE:: [Feb. 21st, 2005|11:56 am]

The new series of german sayings. I occasionally use some and try to translate them, which probably leads to bewilderment on your side ^_^;; So - if you're learning german you might want to add them to your vocabulary.

Saying: "Es stinkt nach Eigenlob!" or "Eigenlob stinkt!"
Literal translation: "It's smelling of self praise!" / "self-praise stinks!"
Meaning/When to use: Typically said when someone flatters/praises himself, which is understood as impolite.

Is there a proper english equivalent? Tell, because I wouldn't know. :D

es stinkt nach eigenlob

u can say he has his head up his own ass (but that's pretty crass)... if u wanted to make a vague statement about them to someone else u could say...
Somebody's got their head up their own ass.

A LESS rude way is 'to blow your own trumpet' or 'to toot your own horn' e.g. He sure likes to blow his own trumpet

I think this is more of what you're saying, so the equivalent is 'to blow one's own trumpet'. P.S even though it's english, I only heard that saying when I was in early high school and it was the first time. I thought it sounded pretty stupid but since then I've grown accustomed to it. Happy reading!
